These instructions are based on the book The Complete Guide for Citing Government Information Resources: A Manual for Writers and Librarians by Diane L. Garner. A copy of this publication is available in the Morrison Room, Government Documents Department of Sims Memorial Library. Students are reminded that each instructor has the authority in his or her own course for specifying how sources are to be cited.

Students should consult the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (2003) for more specific instructions.

Basic format:

Name of the largest government agency involved in publishing this document. Name of the smallest

          (most specific) government agency involved in publishing this document. Title of the document

          (underlined). Place of publication:Name of agency listed as the publishing agency, year of

          publication. (Superintendent of Documents call number).

Example:

United States Department of Health and Human Services. National Institute of Diabetes and
 
            Digestive and Kidney Diseases. You Can Control Your Weight As You Quit Smoking.

            Bethesda: National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 1998.
