Course description
The purpose of this course is to provide instruction and practice in writing the kinds of expository papers which the student is normally required to write in courses above the freshman level. In these papers the student practices the basic principles of writing learned in English 101, and writes expository papers such as the summary, the synthesis,the critical paper, the research paper, and the essay examination.

Proficiency exam
To pass Enlish 102, students must pass an independent assessment of their writing proficiency by submitting a satisfactory portfolio of their writing at the end of the semester. Students who do not pass this independent proficiency assessment cannot pass English 102  and are required to repeat the course in a subsequent semester.

Grading policy
To pass the class you must complete all the work, attend at least 90% of the class meetings, and pass the proficiency exam.

The final grade will be determined by the following scale:
               700-630 A; 629-560 B; 559-490 C; 489-420 D; below 419 F

The essays will be graded according to the English Department' s English 101/102 Grading Rubric.
A: Excellent This essay is characterized by masterful control of purpose and by graceful expression. The content is of compelling interest; the organization and style enhance the meaning. The essay shows evidence that the writer regards the audience as intelligent and discriminating. The essay has virtually no mechanical problems.
B: Good This essay has the clarity and coherence of an adequate essay yet also has depth of content. The organization is impressive. It displays independent thought and a concern for careful expression with virtually no mechanical errors.
C: Adequate This essay is characterized by clarity of purpose and coherence of structure. Its content is usually not developed beyond the obvious, however, and organization is unsophisticated. It may have a few mechanical errors.
D: Poor This essay, while passing, is not satisfactory. It may lack clear purpose, coherence, or sufficient content. It may have weak use of language and bothersome mechanical errors.
F: Unacceptable This essay is characterized by any of the following: Unclear purpose; incoherent organization; inadequate, irrelevant, or illogical development; little originality of thought; reliance on clichés; inappropriate word choice; ineffective or incorrect sentence structure; numerous or significant problems with mechanics and grammar.

To pass the essay must demonstrate correct use of documentation.

In taking this course, students understand that all required papers may be submitted to Turnitin.com or Wadsworth InSite for the detection of plagiarism.  All submitted papers will be included as source documents in the Turnitin.com reference database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of such papers.  Use of the of Turnitin.com service is subject to the "Terms and Conditions of Use" posted on the Turnitin.com website.

Additional information
1. To receive help from me you must turn in the drafts of your papers when I ask for them. Any portion of your work that is not completed will receive no credit; therefore attendance will affect your performance and grade.
2. The English Department Writing Center which is located in D. Vickers Room 383 can provide help and suggestions for your writing,  a place to do your writing, and other free resources.
3. Only Southeastern's email addresses must be used to communicate with the instructor.
3. Students with more than five absences in a Mon-Wed-Fri class can fail the course.  See catalogue for class attendance regulations.
4. Students who turn in work other than their own will fail the course.
5. If you are late, you may be marked absent unless you talk to me after class.
6. If you need help or you have problems completing your work, please make an appointment to see me.
7. Qualified student with a disability seeking accommodations under the Americans with Disability Act are required to self-identify with the office of Student Life, Room 202, Student Union.
8. Friday October 19 is the last day to resign from the university or withdraw from classes.
9.  Free discussion, inquiry, and expression are encouraged in this class.  However, students are expected to display respectful behavior towards the instructor and fellow classmates.  Disruptive behavior that interferes with teaching and learning is not acceptable.
10.  The final exam will be on Monday December 3 at 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
