Research Interests
Organic chemistry: synthesis of  nucleosides and nucleotides as enzyme inhibitors and structural probes.
Biochemistry and Bio-organic chemistry: purification and analysis of enzymes and chemically modified enzymes using modern chromatography and analytical techniques; molecular cloning of viral DNA and RNA polymerases and reverse transcriptase.
Bioassays (Biochemistry & Pharmacology): analysis of nucleotide inhibitors and structural probes against polymerases, particularly of E. coli DNA polymerase I, HIV reverse transcriptase, and more recently RNA polymerases of viral origin.
Medicinal Chemistry: design improved inhibitors of viral, bacterial and cancer cell growth (termed antiviral, antibacterial, and anticancer agents) using modern structure-activity relationship (SAR) techniques.
Molecular modeling: analysis of structures of organic molecules, particularly enzyme inhibitors, using molecular modeling and dynamics.
Molecular cloning and expression: cloning (with Dr. Temple) of West Nile Virus RNA polymerase, and working on bacterial, human H1, and human H2 IMP dehydrogenases.
