"When my friend hussein from South Africa visited, his favorite touristy things were the Voodoo Tour and the Swamp Tour, so here's my take on those. I don't remember which tour company we used for the voodoo tour, so I'll give you contact info on several...I think they're going to be pretty similar. Our group was about 20 people. The good thing about going with an organized group is that although you're not going anywhere that isn't open to the public, you're going to walk into some areas where there will be safety in numbers. The tomb of Marie Laveau was one of the highlights...interesting to see the offerings still left there daily, mostly coins and rum. Besides St. Louis #1 and Marie's tomb, we also visited Congo Square, the birthplace of Jazz and home of Voodoo rituals since the 1740’s and the reputed site of Marie's home on St. Anne St. It was all quite informative, and I enjoyed getting a close look at some of the architecture in areas that I normally wouldn't go. I've heard that a few companies do night tours...maybe too spooky for me!"---Pattie

"A 2 hour tour of the serenely beautiful Manchac swamp...Although I've driven over or through the swamp from home to New Orleans all my life, I really enjoyed this closeup tour. One of the nice things about this particular tour was that we never saw another boat, unlike some of the busier areas. It was incredibly quiet. The alligators were quite happy to see us, as they knew our boat meant yummy raw chicken! They would follow us until we left their home area, then a little ways down a few more would pick up our trail. The tour guide "knew" many of the gators and which ones we would likely see in each area. The boat was large enough to feel safe, but small enough to feel close to the wildlife. You may want to schedule a combination tour of plantations and swamp...check out Cajun Pride's Website for online reservations and coupons for $3 off tour w/o transportation or $8 off tour w/ transportation (You must book the tour yourself to receive discounts, either by phone or Web...not through your hotel."
