Possible Obstacles to Student Learning
Students may forget to subtract the area of the windows and doors when finding the surface area of the walls to be painted.
Students must know how to read a tape measure.
Must have working knowledge of area and perimeter formulas.
May forget to add tax on their cost.

Opportunities for Assessment
*Students will have to record their measurements of the room in an organized manner.  Some suggestions would be to make a chart or sketch a model and label measurements.
*A journal writing on how the surface area of the walls to be painted were found, and a writing on how student decided what materials were to be used.
*Check calculations on cost of each type of material and total cost.
*Oral presentation with visuals.

Lesson Procedures
*Distribute to each group an interior decorating magazine, two tape measures, and an instruction sheet (see attached).  Give students a few minutes to read and discuss directions with group members. Have a volunteer give an oral summary of the activity.
*Observe groups as they take their measurements and record information.  Make sure information is recorded in an orderly fashion.
*Have each group make a presentation to the class to try to get them to hire their decorating company.  The presentation should include visuals.

You and your friends have just opened an interior design business.  Mr. Richbody has asked you to give him a quote on redecorating his guest room. You are new in the business, so you want to be extra careful to give him the proper price.  He has given you freedom to pick out the patterns and colors, but he was specific about a few things, "Put two coats of paint on each wall.  Leave the ceiling as it is.  Put in new carpet.  Make sure you have a border, my wife just loves a border.  Don't worry about the curtains, my daughter loves to sew and wants to make the curtains."

A couple things for you to remember:
When calculating surface area of wall, windows and doors are not included.
You must record your measurements neatly and orderly, a diagram or chart may be helpful.
You must include labor in your final cost.
You already have any equipment needed to refurbish the room, but you will have to order the paint, carpet, border, etc.
Don't forget to include tax when calculating cost. (9% tax)
Each group will present their work to the class in an oral presentation.  Visuals are required, posters, handouts, etc.
All work is to be handed in after completion of presentation.

Good luck and have fun!
