8 am-4:30 pm, weekdays; Wednesdays until 8 pm Contemporary Art Gallery, East Stadium Mapping the Terrain: New Directions in Abstract Paintings This large national painting exhibition curated by Dale Newkirk, associate professor of visual art and director of the Contemporary Art Gallery, explores personal languages of abstract art. Ten artists from New York, New Mexico, Ohio, New Orleans, Illinois, Boston, Virginia and Philadelphia have been chosen for this important exhibition of more than 35 artworks. Exhibiting artists are Randy Asprodites, Robert Bridges, Alan Crockett, Jay Kelly, Paul Loughney, Mollie Oblinger, Bradley Wester, Heidi Whitmen, Michael Wille, and Evert White. Noon-5 pm, weekdays Columbia Theatre lobby International House of Blues Foundation Fanfare partners with the House of Blues Foundation to sponsor an art competition for area schoolchildren. Using “found” materials to create their artwork, young artists are inspired to depict significant events that shaped their lives and world. Participants will travel to the House of Blues Folk Art gallery in New Orleans for the International House of Blues Foundation’s Blues SchoolHouse program. |

This year’s exhibit is dedicated to Denise Tullier-Holly, accomplished artist, Southeastern Lab School teacher, passionate advocate of art education – and the National Art Education Association’s 2007 National Elementary Art Educator of the Year. |

Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Hammond Regional Arts Center, 217 E. Thomas St., Hammond Landscapes Here and There Good friends and former Southeastern faculty colleagues, Gail Hood and Barbara Tardo have contrasting artistic styles. Hood’s is naturalistic and executed in oil and acrylic; Tardo’s is abstract, employing oil and chalk. The exhibit will showcase their individual visions of identical scenes, as well as solo works inspired by landscapes near and far. Opening reception: Friday, Oct. 5, from 5-7 p.m. Free |

8 am-4:30 pm, weekdays; Wednesdays until 8 pm Contemporary Art Gallery’s New Media Gallery, East Stadium The Light Boxes of Elizabeth Sher A professor of art at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and Oakland, Sher creates multi-media works with visual and audio components, such as Searching for Fuel in the Post Fossil Era and Counting Sheep in Times of Stress, light boxes with audio containing a collection of framed digital images. Her prints and paintings have been featured at many university art museums and the San Francisco and San Jose Museums of Art. She has presented solo shows across the country while her films and videos have been widely screened and broadcast. Free |
