Columbia
facts...
Front of the house...
The theater contains seating for 900 – approximately 500 orchestra (floor)
seats and 400 balcony seats.
The theater is universally accessible to all patrons.
The proscenium opening, with its decorative plaster ornamentation, is original.
The original plaster work was repaired.
Dressing rooms and green rooms are located just beyond the stage left doors.
The stage ...
The stage, which originally accommodated vaudeville acts, was enlarged
to suit the needs of today’s performing artists by removing original upstage
dressing rooms and extending the rear wall.
A new “sprung” floor, required for dance, was added to the original stage.
Wings were added to both stage left and stage right to accommodate a variety
of productions.
A new loading dock at stage right allows easy access to the stage for unloading
production equipment and sets.
Logue ...
There are no “bad” seats in the entire theater. Seating in the balcony
has excellent sight-lines. Most
of the column capitals are original. Casts were made of undamaged capitals
to repair damaged ones.
Balcony lobby
The balcony is new and replaces the Columbia’s original two balconies,
which were removed because of extensive termite damage. The removal created
room for the balcony lobby and the “clearstory” above the main lobby.
The balcony can be closed off for events requiring orchestra seating only.
The floor between the main floor and balcony will be renovated for additional
dressing space. |
