Fanfare offers movie classics from Italy, France, Spain and Germany. Cartas Desde del
Parque
(Letters from the Park) is a charming and humorous romance from Nobel Prize-winning author
Gabriel Garcia M rquez echoing the tale of Cyrano De Bergerac (Oct. 1). In Pane e
Cioccolata
(Bread and Chocolate) the marvelous Chaplinesque everyman Manfredi treks to Switzerland to
make his fortune, yet remains the eternal outsider (Oct. 8). Jerard Depardieu stars in the beautiful
French film masterpiece Jean de Florette about a principled man who hopes to become a
gentleman farmer, but whose wily neighbor plots to steal his farm (Oct. 15). Based on a true
story, Das Schreckliche Madchen (Nasty Girl) is a comedy about secrets and surprises
featuring
a fabulous performance by Lena Stolve (Oct. 22).
All foreign
films will be presented at 3:30 pm in the Music Recital Hall, SLU. Free.
Special Film Series
Fanfare's annual "special" film series offers three critically acclaimed and talked-about films.
Il Postino (The Postman), a 1995 nominee for Best Picture, is the humorous and moving
tale of a
simple postman whose eyes are opened to a world of entirely new possibilities when he finds
himself delivering letters to one of the most romantic poets of the twentieth century (Oct. 3).
Phillip Haas' adaption of A.S. Byatt's novella Morpho Eugenia, Angels and
Insects, is a drama of
shimmering beauty and shocking sensuality that uncovers the dark and decadent desires lurking
just beneath the surface of Victorian England's highly structured social order (Oct. 10). Laurence
Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh star in a new adaption of Shakespeare's Othello.
Special films
