SLU COLLAGE CONCERT
CELEBRATES
HIGH SCHOOL HONOR BANDS
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana
University Wind Symphony and faculty musicians will present the university’s
annual Collage Concert at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, December 5, at the Pottle
Music Building Auditorium.
Southeastern Director of Bands
Glen Hemberger describes the concert as “a one-hour extravaganza of musical
diversity and flare.
“This popular concert is presented
in celebration of the 130 high school musicians chosen to participate in
the Southeastern High School Honor Band Festival,” said Hemberger, who
coordinates the band festival.
“Each year, more than 400 students
from throughout the region are nominated by their high school band director
for the festival,” Hemberger said. “Those chosen then audition for chair
placement before members of the Southeastern music faculty, and are placed
in one of two large concert ensembles, the 2003 High School Honors Wind
Symphony and Honors Wind Ensemble.”
Hemberger said this year's musicians
represent 34 high schools, including Lafayette, West Monroe, Slidell, Dutchtown,
Vandebilt Catholic, Mandeville, and Archbishop Rummel high schools.
The Honors Wind Symphony and
Honors Wind Ensemble will be guest conducted by Frank Ticheli, professor
of composition at the University of Southern California, and Timothy Schneider,
former director of bands at Northshore High School.
The Collage Concert will feature
Eric Whitacre's “Godzilla Eats Las Vegas!,” the “Canzona” by Peter Mennin,
and Gustav Mahler's “Um Mitternacht,” sung by Southeastern music major
Daveda Karanas of Mandeville.
Also performing will be the Southeastern
Trombone Choir, the Faculty Brass Quintet, flute professor Chih-hsien Chien,
and guitar instructor Patrick Kerber. Rounding out the program will be
the Wind Symphony's performance of Ticheli’s “Blue Shades,” guest conducted
by the composer.
A native of Monroe, Ticheli is
making his first conducting appearance with the Southeastern Wind Symphony.
His orchestral works have been performed by numerous regional and national
orchestras, including those of Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit,
and Charlotte. Ticheli is internationally known for his works for concert
band, many of which have become standards in the repertoire.
Ticheli’s awards include two
from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and first prize in the Texas
Sesquicentennial Orchestral Composition Competition.
The Southeastern Collage Concert
is free. For additional information, contact the Southeastern Band
