STUDENT TO PREMIERE WORK WITH SOUTHEASTERN CHAMBER
ORCHESTRA
HAMMOND -- Oscar Everaldo Martinez,
a Southeastern Louisiana University music major, will conduct the Southeastern
Chamber Orchestra in a world premiere of one of his own compositions, “Canto
Garifuna,” on November 24.
The free concert is scheduled
for 7:30 p.m. in the Pottle Music Building Auditorium.
With Martinez as conductor, the
orchestra also will perform his arrangements of works by Astor Piazzolla
and Hietor Villa-Lobos.
A native of Tegucigalpa, Honduras,
Martinez will earn his bachelor’s degree in music in May 2004. He said
he has been studying music composition since the age of 15 and is also
a violinist and pianist.
In summer 2002 Martinez received
a scholarship to the participate in the seven-week music program at the
Brevard Music Center in North Carolina where he studied with Dan Locklair,
composer-in-residence at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
“I am pleased to give Everaldo
this opportunity to present his work to Southeastern and the community,”
said Chamber Orchestra Director Yakov Voldman.
