SOUTHEASTERN CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WEEK NOV.
17-21
HAMMOND – Southeastern
will salute international students and celebrate the world’s diverse culture
and heritage with a series of activities, lectures and concerts during
International Week, Nov. 17-21.
Highlights of the week include
a keynote speech at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, in the Student Union
Theatre by Costa Rican journalist Armando Gonzalez, and a special concert,
“Music–The Universal Language,” at 2 p.m., also on Nov. 20, in the Pottle
Music Building Auditorium.
Gonzalez is regional vice president
of the Inter-American Press Association and managing editor of “La Nación.”
He also teaches journalism at the Universidad Autónoma de Centro
América. The topic of his lectue is "The Role of the Media in Economic
and Social Development of Latin America."
The concert will feature a number
of Southeastern international students and will have a touch of a holiday
theme, said Southeastern voice professor Joy Ratliff, who is coordinating
the event.
A string quartet of students
from Romania will perform a Christmas concerto by Corelli, while baritone
James Flick, a graduate student from Kent, Conn., will sing an aria from
the Bach Christmas Oratorio.
Southeastern student Sasha Negrutsa
will join his professor Deborah Andrus in a work for two clarinets composed
by his father. Pianist and composer Vasil Cvetkov will partner with his
fellow Southeastern students to perform his jazz composition, “Freeway.”
Students will also perform a quintet for clarinet by C.M. Weber, and mezzo-sopranos
Daveda Karenas of Mandeville will sing songs from modern day Greece.
Ratliff said the “grand finale” will
feature Southeastern students and guest performers presenting music and
dance from Honduras. The performance is being organized by music major
Everaldo Martinez, who plays the violin and piano as well as composes.
International Week begins with
an “International Extravaganza,” scheduled for 6-9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 17,
in the Student Union Theatre. The event will feature performances by approximately
30 foreign language students, said Lucia Harrison, head of the foreign
languages department.
Harrison said the students will
recite poetry and perform sketches, songs, and classical and popular music.
The event also will include performances by the Southeastern Gospel Choir,
the Cajun band Les Danseurs Cajun de la Louisianne, and Southern University
professor Irma Cobb, who will present a Mexican dance.
Tickets are $5 and will include
international foods provided by area restaurants.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday
through Friday, students and community members can browse a special display
in the Student Union Mall detailing Southeastern’s 2004 study abroad programs,
which are now enrolling participants. Danilo Levi, interim director of
Southeastern’s International Initiatives Office, said Southeastern will
offer study abroad opportunities in Italy, France, Germany, England, Honduras,
and Costa Rica. He said financial Aid and approximately $70,000 in
scholarships are available. For more information, contact Levi at 985-549-2385
or studyabroad@selu.edu or visit

At noon on Tuesday, Nov. 18, five members
of the International Student Association will present a special panel,
“This is My Culture,” in the Student Union Ballroom. The students, who
are from Middle Eastern countries, will give presentations about their
country and field questions from the audience. Refreshments will be provided.
Two hands-on fun events are scheduled
for Friday, Nov. 21, Harrison said. From 3:30-7 p.m., the foreign languages
department and Southeastern Italian Club will present Italian cooking demonstrations
in the Pennington Student Activity Center, room 108. At 7 p.m. in the Kinesiology
and Health Studies Building dance studio, Latin dance lessons will be offered.
