SLU JAZZ ENSEMBLE FEATURES CONCERT OF “OLD, NEW, BORROWED
AND “BLUESY”
WORKS
HAMMOND -- Old favorites, new
compositions, unusual arrangements and the blues -- the Southeastern
Louisiana University Jazz Ensemble’s November 20 concert includes a variety
of jazz styles.
“We’re calling it ‘Something
Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Bluesy,’” said Allen
Zurcher, director of jazz studies. The free concert is scheduled for 7:30
p.m. at Southeastern’s Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown
Hammond.
Zurcher said the concert’s “something
old” encompasses old favorites such as “Li’l Darlin’” by Count Basie and
“Take the A Train” by Duke Ellington. Southeastern student Emmanuel Seals,
an alto saxophone player from Fairhope, Ala., will provide the “something
new” with his original rock ballad, titled “Dr. Straightlady.”
Zurcher said the concert’s “borrowed”
music refers to arrangements of pieces not originally composed for big
band or jazz, such as George Gershwin’s “Strike Up the Band.” “Bluesy”
numbers will include two works by composer Horace Silver, “Sister Sadie”
and “Filthy McNasty,” which are heavily influenced by blues and gospel.
