PERCUSSION CONCERT – “WHAT NOISE? – AT SLU DECEMBER 3
HAMMOND -- Drummers and percussionists
often have to field the question, “How do you put up with all the noise?”
Their answer, said Southeastern Louisiana University percussion instructor
Terrance Mahady, is “Noise? What noise?”
Mahady’s students have chosen
that blythe answer -- “What Noise?” -- as the titled for their December
3 concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall.
“A variety of percussion instruments
and styles will prove that drums can sound pretty and groovy, too,” Mahady
said.
The free concert will feature
solos for snare drum, timpani, marimba, and vibraphone, as well as an ensemble
of percussionists performing the Latin tune “Memories of Alhambra” and
the samba “Tico Tico.”
Physics major Brad Bourgeois
of Lutcher will perform “524 Main Street” for regimental snare drum. Gospel
drummer Donte Moore of Amite will play a movement from William Kraft’s
“English Suite” for four tom-toms, bongos, cymbals and tambourine. Stephen
Hux of New Orleans, who is the drummer at Sugacane’s in downtown Hammond,
will perform two pieces for four timpani, “and a beautiful vibraphone solo
titled ‘Mayflower,’” Mahady said.
Four students will display their
talents on the marimba – Brian Martinez of Destrehan in “Etude No. 1" by
Paul Smadbeck; Scott White of Denham Springs, accompanied by faculty pianist
Charles Effler, in a movement from Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor; graduate
assistant Kevin Estoque of Harvey, in the New Age style “Rhythm Song”;
and Andrew Robin of Madisonville, in Gordon Stout’s “Astral Dance.”
Percussionist Trent Davis, Southeastern’s
director of athletic bands, will play conga drums and bongos for the percussion
ensemble pieces, while jazz guitarist Wilson Marks of Boerne, Texas, will
join in on “Tico Tico.”
Also performing on the ensemble
pieces are Craig Byers of Robert, Ritesh Drgapersad of Gonzales, and Edvin
Alagic, an international student from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

the concert, contact Mahady at 985-549-2184. |
