SOUTHEASTERN TIGHTENS ADMISSION
REQUIREMENTS BEGINNING SUMMER 2004
HAMMOND -- Southeastern
Louisiana University is jumping ahead of schedule in instituting some of
the new admission standards that will be mandated statewide by the Louisiana
Board of Regents in 2005.
The university has received the
University of Louisiana System’s approval to alter its admissions requirements
beginning in summer 2004, said President Randy Moffett.
Currently, beginning freshmen
must meet one of three requirements: an ACT composite of at least 20, ranking
in the upper 50 percent of their high school graduating class or at least
a 2.0 high school grad point average on 17.5 units of English, mathematics,
social studies, science and other core courses.
In addition to those requirements,
beginning next summer students who need more than one developmental course
will not be fully admitted to Southeastern. Moffett said Southeastern will
collaborate closely with community colleges to ensure that students affected
by the changes can pursue post-secondary studies while fulfilling their
developmental requirements to meet Southeastern’s standards.
To meet developmental requirements,
students can participate in a special Southeastern summer program, “Summer
Bridge.” They can also cross-enroll in a community college to take one
or more of their needed remedial courses while simultaneously taking Southeastern
courses, or they can enroll in a community college and transfer to Southeastern
after successfully completing developmental work.
“We are convinced that this intermediate
step is an effective transition to the 2005 admission standards,” Moffett
said. “We are raising the bar and moving ahead to prepare our students,
our communities and our feeder schools for the higher requirements of the
Board of Regents’ 2005 master plan for higher education. We believe the
additional preparation will provide students with their best chance to
be successful at Southeastern. We want our students to succeed.”
Stephen Soutullo, dean of enrollment
management, said Southeastern’s College of Basic Studies will expand the
Summer Bridge program, providing opportunities for 2004 high school graduates
impacted by the proposed changes to address admissions deficiencies prior
to fall 2004. The program allows students to take freshmen or transitional
(developmental) courses in mathematics and English and receive extra support
through tutoring and workshops.
Soutullo said high school students
can also satisfy one or more transitional course requirements before entering
Southeastern through the university’s High School Cooperative Agreement
program. Special courses are offered in certain area high schools to students
whose ACT scores indicate that they could need remedial college courses.
At the end of the courses, students are eligible to submit proficiency
portfolios in math and/or English, which are assessed by the faculty of
the Southeastern Transitional Studies Department. Successful students can
enroll directly in college level courses at Southeastern.
