SLU'S ANNE FERGUSON DIES AUG. 22
HAMMOND -- Anne M. Ferguson, head of Southeastern Louisiana University's Junior
Division and a member of the university faculty for more than 20 years, died August 22.
"Southeastern has lost one of its most dedicated, wonderful employees," said Southeastern
President Sally Clausen. Clausen said Ferguson "seemed to have the magnetism that attracted students
who have special needs because she simply made them, and everyone else, feel very, very special."
Ferguson, a native of New Orleans, joined the Southeastern faculty in 1976 as an assistant
professor of education. A graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana and the University of
Arkansas, she became head of the College of Basic Studies' Developmental Education Department in
1985. As department head, she designed an automated advising system that allows faculty advisors
instant access and accurate tracking of students' academic records.
In 1985 she was the first recipient of Southeastern's prestigious President's Award for
Excellence in Teaching and last year she was again honored with the new President's Award for
Excellence in Service.
Ferguson was named head of the Junior Division, the entry level division for all entering
freshmen and transfer students, in 1989. She was a former vice president of the National Association
for Developmental Education and president of the Louisiana Association for Developmental
Education. Sunday from 6-8 at McNeely in Hammond.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 24, at McKneely Funeral Home in
Hammond. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25, at Holy Ghost Church in
Hammond, with burial is in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans.
In lieu of flowers, donations made be made in Dr. Ferguson's name to Hammond's Stanley S.
Scott Cancer Center, in care of Dr. Chris Theodossiou, 42161 Veterans Ave., Hammond, LA, 70403,
(504) 543-4403).
