SLU ANNOUNCES 1997 HOMECOMING COURT
     HAMMOND -- Seven Southeastern Louisiana University students have been chosen to
reign over 1997 Homecoming festivities, Nov. 17-22.
     Chosen as members of the court were seniors Shannon Michelle Callahan of Ponchatoula,
Sherry Carr Green of Amite, Leslye Monique Hampton of Saint Rose, Shalan Nadel Melton of
Darrow, Deanne Marie Roussel of Luling and Vanessa Rowinsky of Denham Springs, and junior
Christy M. Brown of Baton Rouge.
     The 1997 Homecoming queen, the top junior or senior vote-getter in the recent campus
election, will be announced at halftime of the Homecoming basketball game, the Lions season
opener against Texas College at 2:05 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Southeastern University Center.
     The court will also participate in Homecoming festivities such as the tip off pep rally at
noon on Monday, Nov. 187, the bonfire at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 and the Alumni Awards
Evening at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 in the University Center. Price Waterhouse executive Charles
O'Drobinak, a 1953 Southeastern graduate, will be honored as "Alumnus of the Year" at the
festive awards buffet.
     On Homecoming Day, Saturday, Nov. 22, the court will ride in the 11 a.m. parade.
Beginning at First Guaranty Bank, the caravan will travel west on East Thomas Street, north on
North Oak Street, and west on University Ave. (Columbus Drive) to the University Center. The
court will also attend the free pre-game barbecue at the Alumni House and the alumni reunions at
the University Center and the Homecoming grand finale, a fireworks show, also at the University
Center at 6 p.m.
     Callahan is the daughter of Donna Callahan and Michael Cox and is a business
management major. She is the sweetheart of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and is a member of the
SLU Gospel Choir, Pan-Hellenic, the Black Caucus, Student Advisory Committee and the Society
for the Advancement of Management. She was a 1996-1997 Miss Louisiana USA Contestant, 
received the African American Achievement Awards and was listed on the National Deans List.
     Green, the daughter of Betty and James Perkins, is majoring in biological
sciences/pre-medicine. She is the sweetheart of Seta Phi Beta sorority. She was named 1997
African American
Role Model, holds a Board of Trustees Scholarship and is listed in "Who's Who Among College
Students." She received Southeastern's "Green S" award for extracurricular service and is a
member of Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society and Gamma Sigma Alpha Green Honor Society.
     Hampton, a zoology/pre-medicine major, is the daughter of Louis and Ada Hampton. She
is the sweetheart of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and was 1996 African American Role Model of
the Year. She is a member of the Delta Omega Alpha pre-professional honor society, Gama Beta
Phi, Gamma Sigma Alpha and the SLU Gospel Choir. She is in Southeastern's Honors Program
and received the Green S award.
     The daughter of Linda Melton of Darrow and Jessie Melton of Baton Rouge, Shalan
Melton is majoring in kinesiology with an emphasis in athletic training and is sweetheart of the
Student Athletic Trainers Association. She is a former Orientation Leader and Emerging Leader
and was chosen Miss Congeniality in the two past Miss Southeastern pageants. She received a
Southeaster presidential scholarship.
     Deanne "Dee Dee"Roussel is the daughter of Robert Roussel of Luling and Nanette Sissac
of Slidell. A mass communication major, she is president of the Panhellenic Council and  serves as
Theta Phi Alpha's senior Panhellenic delegate. She is the recipient of Theta Phi Alpha Founders
Foundation Alumnae Scholarship and is a member of Gamma Beta Phi, Gamma Sigma Alpha and
Rho Lambda honor societies and the Lambda Pi Eta honor society for communication
majors. She received a Southeastern Board of Trustees honors scholarship and was named most
outstanding student in speech/mass communications last spring. She is sweetheart of the
Panhellenic Council.
     Vanessa Rowinsky is the daughter of Billy and Mary Rowinsky and is a microbiology
major. She is the sweetheart of Theta Xi fraternity and is a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma
sorority.
     Christy Brown, the daughter of Larry and Anne Brown, is majoring in lower elementary
education. She is the sweetheart of Theta Phi Alpha. The recipient of a Chi Alpha Christian
Fellowship, she is a Southeastern Orientation Leader and a member of Gamma Beta Phi, the
Baptist Student Union, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Campus Activities Board. She participated in
Southeastern's Empowered and Emerging Leaders and LEAD Programs, serving as a facilitator.
