HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University graduate and Athletic Hall of Fame
member Sheldon Fernandez (Class of '60), a judge of the 24th Judicial District, will be honored
as 1998 Alumnus of the Year at Southeastern's annual Alumni Awards Evening, Nov. 20.
The banquet and awards ceremony, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the University Center, will
launch Southeastern's 1998 Homecoming weekend and cap a week's worth of university pride
activities by Southeastern students.
Tickets for the Awards Evening, which also will feature announcement of the Distinguished
Service Award, are available at the Alumni Center, 504-549-2150 or 1-800-SLU-ALUM. Ticket
price is $15.
Homecoming 1998 will see the return of a fun-and-friends format that has been a hit for the
past two years, Kathy Pittman, director of alumni relations, said. "We hope all of our alumni and
Southeastern supporters will 'come home' to enjoy the bonfire, Awards Evening, parade,
reunions,
and basketball game," Pittman said. "Homecoming has something for everyone!"
The Dream Team, Southeastern's student Homecoming committee, has continued its
tradition of choosing the Homecoming theme by christening this year's activities "Flying High
With Southeastern Pride." Students will tip off Homecoming action with a noon celebration,
"Blast Off!," including a pep rally and the Southeastern Fashion Council's annual fashion show
on Monday, Nov. 16, in the Student Union Mall. On Tuesday, Nov. 17, students will "get goofy
playing team games sponsored by student organizations from 3 -5 p.m. in the field adjacent to D

Homecoming activities "heat up" on Thursday, Nov. 19, the date when Sigma Tau Gamma
will set a match to the annual Homecoming bonfire. Earlier, from 11a.m.-1 p.m, Gamma Beta
Phi honor and service society will conduct the Two tons of Fun Food Drive, collecting food for
the Tangipahoa Food Pantry's holiday needs. Students will gather at around 5:30 p.m. at West
Stadium for a spirited caravan around campus leading to the bonfire site at the University Center.
After the bonfire's flames and fun have subsided, students will enjoy a Homecoming dance,
sponsored by Gamma Beta Phi and the Student Government Association, from 9 p.m. to
midnight at Twelve Oaks.
Homecoming Day, Nov. 21, will hit the ground running - literally! - with the annual Options
Holiday Prance Fun Run. The day's events include an open house at the Alumni Center; the
parade, featuring more floats and bands than ever; contests and basketball games by alumni of
the Lions and Lady Lions basketball teams; and the Homecoming game, Southeastern versus

"Homecoming Headquarters" will be the annual barbeque, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1

Southeastern faculty and administrators, games for children, and reunions.
Queen of Homecoming 1997 Christy Brown will transfer her crown to her successor at the
game's halftime. During the game, Roomie, Southeastern's mascot, will help President Sally
Clausen draw the names of Homecoming prize winners.
The winner of the seat number drawing will receive $400 (two $100 American Express gift
certificates to keep and $200 for a Southeastern program). Those who catch one of the special
giant doubloons tossed during the Homecoming parade, will win a pair of airline tickets
