PARTNERS – Southeastern Louisiana University President Randy Moffett accepts

SLU RECEIVES $221,000 CHECK FROM STATE HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s Division of Continuing Education and Special Activities and the Amite Foundry & Machinery, Inc. of Amite have received a $221,383 check from the Louisiana Department of Labor for the Incumbent Worker Program. Louisiana Secretary of Labor Dawn Romero Watson presented the check to Southeastern President Randy Moffett and Amite Foundry Human Resources Manager Lisa Bond at the state Capitol in Baton Rouge. Monies from the check will be used to train 114 Amite Foundry employees both through public and private sectors, and improve technology and machinery at Southeastern. “It takes all of us working together to do what the state, its citizens and the economy need,” said Moffett. “With this training alone, we will create 17 additional jobs with the Amite Foundry, and be able to provide additional training to our own students.” “We could not provide this training without the help of Southeastern and this grant from the state of Louisiana,” said Bond. “This caliber of training would normally cost us thousands, but now we can do it without charging back to our customers and still remain profitable.” The grants will be used to help Amite Foundry & Machinery, Inc., of Amite upgrade employee skills in computers, human resources and industrial technology and create new jobs. Southeastern has been chosen by the Department of Labor to provide the training for the grants, and all funds will be coordinated through the university’s Division of Continuing Education. Amite Foundry will receive training from Southeastern and partnering schools University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University. This is the fourth grant Southeastern has received from the Louisiana Incumbent Worker program, totaling more than $1 million dollars. In July 2001, $197,602 was received for Gulf SLU Receives $221,000 Check From State – South Machine of Ponchatoula and $59,702 for Crossover Inc., of Independence. Following in October, $543,603 was used to train employees of Gilsbar Inc., of Covington To be eligible for participation in the Louisiana Incumbent Worker Program, a business must have operated in Louisiana and contributed to the state's Unemployment Insurance System for at least three years. In addition, an employer, or consortium of employers with similar needs, must exhibit long-range commitment to employee training and have at least 15 employees to be trained. Preferential consideration is given to those companies that select public training providers, donate equipment and supplies to the program, and participate in the Welfare-to-Work Initiative.
