SLU DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATION TAKES LADE HONORS
HAMMOND -- Mary Mocsary of Hammond, an instructor of developmental English at
Southeastern Louisiana University, is the 1998 recipient of the Louisiana Association of
Developmental Education's "J.J. Ewell Award for Outstanding Educator."
Mocsary received the award at the annual LADE conference in Alexandria, La. A
member of the developmental education faculty for nine years, Mocsary has presented papers
and workshops at a number of state and national conferences and served on many departmental
and university committees.
Also at the conference, Peggy Benning of Livingston, a 1993 Southeastern graduate in
elementary education and former developmental student, won the second annual Dr. Anne
Ferguson Award for Alumnus of Developmental Education. Benning is a teacher at St.
Alphonsus School in Greenwell Springs.
Mocsary replaces Southeastern's Billie Theriot as LADE secretary, while department
head Sarah Spence is the organization's new president-elect. Theriot and Southeastern colleague
Leah Sadden are editors of the National Association of Developmental Education's newsletter.
