SOUTHEASTERN NAMES NEW VICE PRESIDENTS AND DEAN
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University begins the fall semester with two new
vice presidents and a new dean for the College of Education.
Patsy M. Causey has been named vice president for student affairs and Joseph H. Miller
Jr., vice president for institutional advancement. Both are long-time Southeastern deans and
faculty members. Appointed to head the College of Education is dean Stephen Ragan.
Causey, who has a doctorate in education from Mississippi State University, has 26 years
experience in higher education administration at Southeastern. During that time she has served as
director of women's housing, dean of women, dean of student life, and dean of the College of
Basic Studies, a position she has held since 1983.
"I have extensive hands-on experience in student affairs," Causey said, "consisting of
working with student housing, discipline, health and counseling services, students with
disabilities, student activities, organizations, career planning and placement, multi-cultural affairs
and student government."
Since the early 1970s, she has been an active member of the American College Personnel
Association, one of the nation's largest student affairs organizations. She also has presented over
50 papers and presentations at state, regional and national conferences and workshops.
Vice President Miller, who received a doctorate in business administration from the
University of Mississippi, first joined Southeastern's faculty in 1970 as an assistant professor of
marketing. He headed the marketing department from 1978 to 1984, when he was named dean of
the College of Business.
Since 1970, Miller has presented scores of academic papers at national conferences and
associations. In addition, his articles on management, marketing and finance are widely
published by scholarly journals. In 1993, he received the Academy of Business Administration's
prestigious Most Outstanding College of Business Deans Award, an honor given to only five
business deans in the nation.
While dean, Miller established several business scholarships as well as initiating several
innovative programs, including the Executive-in-Residence Program, Business Week Program,
James Livingston Ethics Lecture Series, Small Business Development Center, Business Research
Center and Distinguished Professor Fund. In addition, the college received national accreditation
by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.
Dean Ragan, who received a doctorate in special education at Utah State University,
comes to Southeastern from North Dakota's Minot State University where he served as executive
director of the North Dakota Center for Disabilities. Prior to holding that position, the Oregon
native was a professor and chairperson of the Minot's department of special education. He also
has taught at Lewis-Clark State College in North Dakota, and Bemidji State University in
Minnesota.
In 1991, North Dakota's governor appointed Ragan to the State Council on Development
Disabilities. He also received the North Dakota Council for Exceptional Children's annual
outstanding service award.
The University of Louisiana Board of Trustees approved Causey and Ragan's
appointments in August. The university will ask the board to approve Miller's nomination in
September.
