SLU BEGINS PLANNING FOR 75TH ANNIVERSARY IN YEAR 2000
HAMMOND -- President Sally Clausen has named a steering committee to plan
Southeastern Louisiana University's 75th anniversary celebration, scheduled for Jan. 1, 2000-
Jan. 1-2001.
The committee, which began meeting in April, is headed by two veteran members of the
Southeastern family who recently retired: Vic Couvillion, long-time director of Student
Publications, as chair, and history professor Howard Nichols as co-chair.
The committee also includes Albert Doucette, associate dean of the College of Arts and
Sciences; alumni Mayson Foster, Guy Recotta Jr., T. Jay Seale III and Celene Short; student
Susan Howell; Alumni Association director Kathy Pittman; Public Information Office assistant
director Christina Chapple; Fanfare director Harriet Vogt, and music professor Willis Delony.
Clausen and the university's vice presidents are ex-officio members.
"I want to thank those who have agreed to serve on our 75th Anniversary Committee,"
Clausen said. "All members bring special talents and interests to the group...and all are dedicated
friends and supporters of our university."
The committee will oversee the work of a number of subcommittees, including "events,"
"history," "community participation," "campus participation," and "marketing/public relations."
Volunteers interested in serving on a 75th anniversary committee are not only welcome, but are
actively being sought, Couvillion said.
"If you have ideas, time, or expertise to contribute, please feel free to get in touch with
me or another committee member," he said. "We'd like to see as many people as possible from
throughout Southeastern's service region involved in the celebration planning."
Clausen said she has charged the committee "with planning a first rate, excellent

anniversary celebration that is worthy of our great university's history. We invite everyone -- our
students, faculty, staff, alumni and many, many friends and supporters -- to join us in this time of
joy and celebration."
Couvillion said among the celebration highlights he would like to see is the establishment
of a Southeastern "museum" of photographs and artifacts. Alumni and friends are invited to
share memories and memorabilia of their years at Southeastern.
Photographs, which will be used in displays and publications, can be sent to the SLU
Public Information Office, SLU 880, Hammond, LA 70402. The photographs will be
electronically scanned and promptly returned, Couvillion said. For information, contact Public
Information at 504-549-2341 or publicinfo@selu.edu.
Graduates or Southeastern friends who have artifacts or souvenirs they are willing to
share can contact Couvillion at 504-345-8127 or viccou@i-55.com or the Alumni Association at
1-800-SLU-ALUM.
"We will take the greatest care with anything that is submitted," Couvillion said.
