YOUNG ARTISTS CAN STILL REGISTER FOR SLU ART WORKSHOP
HAMMOND -- Young artists can still register for Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual Children’s Art Workshop, scheduled July 7-17 at Clark Hall.
Children ages 6-13 can participate in morning (9-11:30 a.m.) or afternoon (2-3:30 p.m.) sessions of the popular workshop, which will be offered Monday through Thursday.
Southeastern visual arts professor Kim Finley-Stansbury said the theme of this year’s camp is “Marine and Wildlife of Southeast Louisiana.”
“Children will explore the Louisiana swamps through their minds and create visual products based on that exploration,” said Finley-Stansbury, who is an art education specialist. She will be joined on the camp staff by Director Ron Kennedy, a painter and photographer and veteran Southeastern visual arts professor.
Covington High School art teacher Diane Andry and April Hammond, who recently received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Louisiana State University, will supervise the Southeastern education majors who will work with the young campers.
“Students often don’t get time during the regular school year to create any art at all,” said Finley-Stansbury. “What really makes this camp unique is that most lessons will be tied to a visual artist example or role model that is used to inspire and provoke students in a unique way. Students also will have the opportunity to share their artworks with their peers in discussions and critiques at the end of most of the lessons.”
Finley-Stansbury said students will create seven major projects, such as mixed media collages, model magic, and fabric crayon t-shirt designs. Older children will spend two days working in the darkroom on simple, creative photography projects.
“At the end of the second week of camp, all student artwork will be displayed in Clark
Hall and parents, friends and family will be invited to see what their budding artists have created,” Finley-Stansbury said. “The Parent’s Day Art Show is a way to share, validate and celebrate the artistic process.”
Parents can register their children up to and on the first day of camp at Southeastern Continuing Education in room 103 of the University Center on University Avenue. Enrollment is limited to 75 students per session.
The cost is $45 per child. Children will be enrolled on a first come, first serve basis. Registration forms are available at Continuing Education. Payment must accompany the registration form.
