SLU FACULTY TO APPEAR WITH BATON ROUGE CONCERT BAND AT STATE CAPITOL
HAMMOND – Members of the Southeastern Louisiana University music faculty will be
featured in the Baton Rouge Concert Band’s Labor Day Concert on the steps of the State Capitol Building in Baton Rouge.
Southeastern Director of Bands Glen J. Hemberger will serve as guest conductor for the free annual event, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, September 1.
Recently, Hemberger served as guest conductor of the New Orleans Civic Symphony Orchestra, and the New Orleans Concert Band. This will be his first appearance with the Baton Rouge Concert Band, a community ensemble of 50 musicians from throughout the greater Baton Rouge area.
The concert will also feature Bryan DePoy, professor of trumpet at Southeastern, performing Alexander Goedicke's “Concert Etude.” DePoy is in his fifth year at Southeastern, and has appeared with Hemberger in concerts with the New Orleans Civic Symphony, and the Southeastern Wind Symphony.
Southeastern’s newly appointed Director of Athletic Bands, L. Trent Davis, will guest conduct a medley of songs from the Broadway musical, “Oklahoma!” Davis is currently completing his doctoral degree from the University of Oklahoma in Norman where he served as assistant director of the "Pride of Oklahoma" Marching Band.
The concert will include works by Gustav Holst, Frank Ticheli, Philip Sparke, Henry Fillmore, and Percy Grainger.
Founded in 1976 by Vernon Taranto, the Baton Rouge Concert Band is an all-volunteer group of musicians whose professions range from engineers to teachers.  In 2002, Sheily Bell, director of bands at Dutchtown High School, assumed the primary conducting duties of the band. The concert band performs approximately 12 times a year in the region, and has presented concerts in Florida and Texas.
