SLU MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY GRADUATE PROGRAM ACCREDITED
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana
University’s master’s degree track in marriage and family therapy has been
accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational
Programs (CACREP), according to John Crain, Provost and Vice President
for Academic Affairs.
“We are very proud of the quality
of our academic programs as evidenced by the stamp of approval that comes
with accreditation such as this,” said Crain. “Southeastern’s counseling
faculty are to be commended for their excellent program design.”
The accreditation, said Brian
Canfield, head of the Department of Human Development, “is particularly
exciting because Louisiana has implemented licensing for marriage and family
therapists.” CACREP accreditation, he said, means that graduates
of Southeastern’s program will meet all academic standards for state licensure
as marriage and family counselors. They will be able to obtain the license
after completing a two-year, post-degree supervised internship.
Canfield said Southeastern’s
program was designed around a model curriculum from the American Association
for Marriage and Family Therapy and is one of only two such accredited
graduate programs at Louisiana state-supported universities.
Southeastern began offering graduate
courses in the marriage and family program track last spring and will confer
its first degrees in May, Canfield said.
Southeastern also offers graduate
program tracks in school, community and student affairs counseling, all
of which are accredited by CACREP. |
