“CELEBRATION OF THE LIGHTS” TO ILLUMINATE SOUTHEASTERN NOV. 18
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University is inviting the campus and community to share in an "illuminating" prelude to the holiday season when President Randy Moffett presides at a festive lighting of campus holiday decorations on Tuesday, November 18.
Called  “Celebration of the Lights,” the event is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Pottle Performance Circle. Community members, as well as faculty, staff and students, are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to Friendship Circle to enjoy the ceremony.
Moffett plans to flip a ceremonial switch to illuminate hundreds of white lights trimming buildings, wreaths, and trees throughout the Southeastern campus.
The Celebration of the Lights will also include music by the Southeastern Brass Quintet and young singers from the Southeastern Lab School and Holy Ghost School. A holiday performance is also planned by Southeastern’s Izzy Moving Dance Theatre.
Refreshments will be available. Southeastern’s Lion mascot – attired as “Roomie Claus” – will be joined by student athletes and other student leaders in handing out candy canes to youngsters in the audience. International students will also participate, since the Celebration of the Lights will take place during the university’s annual International Week, scheduled Nov. 17-21.
“Admission” for the lighting festivities  is a non-perishable food item for the Celebration of the Lights food drive, which is one of many holiday service activities being sponsored by Southeastern student organizations. Organized by Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, the food drive will begin November 10, when boxes for donations of non-perishable food items will be placed throughout campus. The items are being collected for the Tangi Food Pantry.
As part of holiday and International Week activities, Southeastern will present a special concert, "Music -- The Universal Language," at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 20 at the Pottle Music Building Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
For additional information about the Celebration of the Lights, contact Southeastern Public Information, 985-549-2341 or publicinfo@selu.edu.
