SOUTHEASTERN CHOIRS SEEKING STUDENT, COMMUNITY SINGERS
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s choral ensembles are seeking singers.
The Northshore Chorale and University Chorus – non-audition ensembles open to all students and area residents – will begin rehearsals on Jan. 18, said Alissa Mercurio Rowe, director of choral activities.
“With more than 100 singers from majors throughout the university and professions across the community, these ensembles regularly perform major works with professional orchestras and soloists,” Rowe said. “We’re inviting anyone who enjoys choral singing to join us at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18, in the Pottle Music Building Annex choral room [room 165A].”
The choirs rehearse together from 7-9 p.m. each Tuesday in the choral room.
“This spring the ensembles will perform a variety of works including spirituals, folk songs and the “Pergolesi Magnificat” with full orchestra,” Rowe said.
The repertoire for the choirs also includes Mozart's “Requiem” and “Mass in C minor,” Bernstein's “Chichester Psalms,” the “Fauré Requiem,” Orff's “Carmina Burana,” Schubert’s “Mass in G,” and Vaughan Williams’ “Five Mystical Songs” in addition to many other masterworks.
In 2004 the University Chorus and Northshore Chorale performed two patriotic choruses with the Southeastern Wind Symphony at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts during Fanfare. They also presented Vivaldi’s “Gloria” with full orchestra last December.
Interested singers can contact Rowe for additional information at 985-549-2334 or arowe@selu.edu.
