SLU UNIVERSITY CHORUS AND NORTHSHORE CHORALE SEEKING
MEMBERS
HAMMOND -- Choral singing at
Southeastern Louisiana University is not just for music majors. Faculty,
students and area residents who enjoy singing are invited to join the University
Chorus and the Northshore Chorale.
The non-audition choirs, which
combined their voices in popular concerts each semester, will begin
rehearsals later this month, said conductor Alissa Mercurio Rowe, director
of choral activities at Southeastern.
Rehearsals are scheduled from
7-9 p.m. each Tuesday, beginning August 26, in the Music Annex choral room
“The University Chorus and the
Northshore Chorale present diverse programs of high musical standard,”
said Rowe. “The purpose of the choirs is to experience diverse music as
a group at very high standards and to use this music as a vehicle of our
expression.”
She said the fall semester musical
selections will include Buxtehude’s cantata “Rejoice, Earth and Heaven,”
African carols, and standard holiday carols.
“The members of this ensemble
invest a great degree of energy and commitment and the hard work has definitely
paid off,” Rowe said. “In 1998 the combined choirs’ performance of the
Bach “B Minor Mass” won the New Orleans Classical Music Award for best
ensemble performance.”
