SOUTHEASTERN LAB SCHOOL DISPLAYS “DAY OF THE DEAD” ALTAR
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University Lab School will construct and display a special "El Dia de los Muertos" (“Day of the Dead”) altar to observe Mexico’s national holiday.
Art teacher Denise Tullier-Holly said the "El Dia de los Muertos" altar will be on display  Oct. 30-Nov. 3 in the Lab School’s Learning Resource Center.
The Days of the Dead coincide with the Christian All Souls and All Saints days, November 1 and 2. Throughout Mexico, those who have died in the past year are remembered, their pictures placed on family altars and special food and drink are offered for the souls of the departed. The El Dia de los Muertos altar includes traditional elements such as pan de muertos (a sweet bread), sempoxochitl flowers (chrysanthemums), crepe paper, calaveras (skulls and skeletons), photographs of loved ones and contributions by local artists.
"Guests are invited to place their own remembrances of loved ones on our Lab School altar," said Tullier-Holly.
Tullier-Holly said the Day of the Dead observance is part of the Lab School’s program to integrate social studies and art.
