HAMMOND --  The two remaining candidates in the runoff for the District 6 Louisiana Senate seat will face off in a 7 p.m. public forum at Southeastern Louisiana University Thursday, June 30.
State Rep. Diane G. Winston of Covington and Julie Quinn of Metairie, a former member of the Jefferson Parish School Board, will answer questions from a panel at the forum to be held in Southeastern’s Student Union Theatre. The candidates – both Republicans – are vying for the seat held by the late Sen. John Hainkel Jr. The runoff election will be held Saturday, July 9.
The event is sponsored by the Southeastern Student Government Association, the Hammond Chamber of Commerce and the St. Tammany West Chamber of Commerce. The forum will be broadcast live over 90.9 KSLU and Northshore Broadcasting stations, including Tangi 96.5, Northshore 104.7, Sunny 106.1 and Kajun 107.1. KSLU will also stream the forum live on the Internet at www.selu.edu/kslu.
The event will be moderated by Maura Donahue, president of DonahueFavret Contractors Holding Company of Mandeville. A member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce board of directors since 1988, she was recently elected chair, the first woman elected to the organization’s top spot. Panelists include Southeastern SGA President Paul Donaldson of Folsom, a junior marketing major; Ricky Masaracchia, a 20-year employee with the Louisiana Department of Labor and chairman elect of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce; and Merrill Wautlet, senior vice president of Resource Bank and chairman of the board of the St. Tammany West Chamber of Commerce.
Candidates will make introductory and wrap-up statements. Panelists’ questions will cover topics such as economic development, education, health care and issues specific to the north shore. The forum is scheduled to conclude at 8:15 p.m.
