PARENTING TO BE FOCUS OF FAMILY LIFE CONFERENCE
HAMMOND Southeastern Louisiana University's College of Education and Human
Development will co-sponsor "Building a Learning Community: A Family Life Conference" on
March 27 at Southeastern's University Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Dr. Carol S. Lidz, associate professor and director of the School Psychology Program at
Touro College in New York City, will present the keynote speech, "Let's Think About It." Lidz
will outline a program she developed to assist parents in helping their preschool and kindergarten
children develop a foundation for thinking, learning and literacy.
For more than eight years, Lidz created and served as director of a regional team that
provided multi disciplinary services to preschools throughout Philadelphia. She has written a
number of articles, chapters and books focusing on parent-child interaction, preschool
assessment
and the newly developing model of dynamic assessment. Lindz has also developed a
specialization in early childhood for school psychology students at Temple University.
The Family Life Conference, also sponsored by the Southeastern Department of Human
Development, Tangipahoa Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council and Louisiana Children's Trust
Fund, will also offer breakout information sessions on various aspects of child and family life.
Topics include Child Development, Parenting Skills and Strategies, Positive Youth
Development, and Character Education. Other topics will include Effective Mentoring Programs,
Head Start Programs, and Multi-Systemic Therapy for At-Risk Families. Finally, Self-esteem,
Learning Strategies, Supportive Parenting, Coping with Stress, and Reestablishing Authority as
the Parent will be among other areas of interest.
Pre-registration is required by February 20. Seating is limited. For additional information
on events and registration, contact Miller Memorial Library Resource Center at 504-345-5493
between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
