SLU OPERA/MUSIC THEATRE WORKSHOP STAGES EVENING OF ROGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN CLASSICS
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University’s Opera/Music Theatre Workshop has cast seven singers in"Some Enchanted Evening: The Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein,"
a celebration of classic musical theatre songs that have become a part of American culture.
The show, the Opera/Music Theatre Workshop’s contribution to Southeastern’s annual Fanfare arts festival, will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8 through Saturday, Oct. 11 at Pottle Music Building Auditorium. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for senior citizens, Southeastern faculty and staff and non-SLU students. Southeastern students are admitted free with their university I.D. Tickets are available at the door or at the Fanfare Box Office in the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts lobby, 220 E. Thomas St., in downtown Hammond.
“Some Enchanted Evening” will star Emily Stokes of Covington, James Flick of South Charleston, W.Va., Simon Pfeil and Patricia Ramirez of Hammond, Scott Munson of Albany; Rachel Johnson of Covington, and Sarah Osterberger of Baton Rouge. The productions includes songs from classics such as “The Sound of Music,” “The King and I,” “Oklahoma,” “Flower Drum Song,” and “South Pacific.”
“Some Enchanted Evening,” said Opera/Music Theatre Workshop Director Charles Effler, “is an evening of sparkling entertainment -- romantic, amusing, poignant and, enchanting. Rodgers and Hammerstein penned some of Broadway's most enduring masterpieces. This show is classic American musical theatre. The stunning collection of compositions offers the performers an opportunity to explore the songs within their own styles and sensibilities, and offers the audience a glorious parade of genuine hits.”
In the first act, the performers are seen "backstage," where the songs are used as dialogue
and explore the relationships between the personalities. In the second art, the singers perform individually on stage, eventually coming together for a grand celebration of Rodgers and Hammerstein classics.
Fanfare box office hours are noon to 5 p.m., weekdays. For a 2003 Fanfare brochure and ticket order form or for additional information about Fanfare events, contact Fanfare at 985-543-4366 or fanfare_ctpa@selu.edu or  visit www.selu.edu/fanfare.
