2004 Homecoming schedule

ROOMIE GOES AROUND THE WORLD – Southeastern Louisiana University students chose “Roomie Goes Around the World” for the theme of Homecoming 2004. This year’s homecoming logo was also the work of a student. The logo was designed by Michael Trahan, a senior art major from Livingston. Trahan is a graphic design student assistant in the university’s Public Information Office.

SOUTHEASTERN CELEBRATES HOMECOMING OCTOBER 4-9
     HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University is getting ready to kick off its annual Homecoming celebration – a spirited week of activities that is once again partnered with football action in Strawberry Stadium. 
     The Dream Team, Southeastern=s student Homecoming committee, has chosen “Roomie Goes Around the World” as the theme for Homecoming 2004. Student fun begins with a university “Family Reunion” at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 4 in the Student Union Park, a new activity sponsored by all Southeastern African American Greek organizations. The sororities and fraternities hope to make the event an annual tradition.
     Students will also stage events that are already traditional during Homecoming week: a zany evening of “Fear Factor” style games on Tuesday, Oct. 5, the popular Gumbo Ya Ya fest on Wednesday, Oct. 6, and a community service day, including Gamma Beta Phi’s annual Tangi Food Pantry food drive, on Thursday, Oct. 7.
     The African American Alumni Chapter will get a jumpstart on Homecoming on Oct. 1 when they host the Midnight Masquerade ball in the Student Union ballroom. Tickets for the 7 p.m. gala are $25 per couple and a registration form is available online at www.selu.edu/alumni.
     On Tuesday, Oct. 5, faculty and student teams will flex their intellectual muscles in Phi Kappa Phi’s Homecoming Quiz Bowl, scheduled for 2-6 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre.
     Homecoming fun will turn up a notch on Thursday, Oct. 7, with two luncheons. The FE-Lions will gather at noon at Topé La Catering on Thomas St. in downtown Hammond with football head coach Hal Mumme as guest speaker, and Lyceum Lights at Twelve Oaks will feature the reminiscences of the retired faculty members Gene McDonald, associate professor of education, and Ralph Shaw, professor emeritus of chemistry.

     Homecoming spirit will heat up – literally – Thursday evening when the Homecoming bonfire is torched at 7 p.m., next to the Alumni Center on University Ave. The evening will also feature a pep rally, street dance and fireworks.
     The Alumni Awards Evening is set for 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, at Twelve Oaks. Among a variety of honorees will be Alumnus of the Year Coletta C. Barrett, a 1991 graduate who is the first woman chair of the board for the American Heart Association, and Pat Vitter Williams, a former principal and Alumni Association board member, who will receive the association’s Distinguished Service Award.
      Tickets for the cocktail buffet event are $15 per person or $120 for a table for eight. Tickets can be ordered online at www.selu.edu/alumni or purchased at the Alumni Center, 985-549-2150 or 1-800-SLU-ALUM 
     The action begins early on Homecoming Day, Saturday, Oct. 9, and fun and spirit will fill Friendship Circle for most of the day. Alumni and visitors can enjoy free fitness workouts at the Pennington Student Activity Center, take campus tours, tailgate in Friendship Circle and Twelve Oaks, browse a marketplace of food and craft booths, and enjoy bands at the Pottle Performance Circle. Meanwhile, children can have fun with a variety of activities, crafts, and games.
     A “Wall of Honor” with plaques recognizing donors of endowed scholarships, professorships and chairs will be dedicated at 10 a.m. in Sims Memorial Library. The university will also unveil an historic marker at the site of Hammond Hall dormitory on Texas Ave. at 4:15 p.m.
     A number of groups have planned Homecoming Day reunions at Twelve Oaks, including the Spirit of the Southland Band and Students of the States; the Southeastern Lab School (all classes); the 1954 undefeated football team, and the classes of 1964, ’74, ’84, ’94, and ’99. 
     As the excitement builds toward the 6 p.m. Southeastern-Northern Colorado Homecoming game in Strawberry Stadium, the Homecoming parade will roll through downtown Hammond and Friendship Circle to the University Center at 2 p.m. The football team and coaches plan to walk through the circle at 3:45 p.m., and the Spirit of the Southland marching band will perform in front of the Pottle Music Building around 5 p.m. before trekking into Strawberry Stadium to continue re-game entertainment.
      Members of the 2004 Homecoming queen and beau courts will be recognized and the queen and king will be announced and crowned at halftime.
     Joining the Homecoming schedule as special events are a reception for a sculpture exhibition by 2002 graduate Jessica Weaver from 5-6:30 p.m., Oct. 5 at Sims Memorial Library, and the Southeastern Theatre’s Oct. 5-8 performance of the comedy “[sic]” at 7:30 p.m. in Vonnie Borden Theatre. Also on the schedule are two presentations by Fanfare at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts: Odyssey Dance Theatre’s “Thriller” at 7 p.m. on Oct. 6 and “Late Night Catechism” at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 7.
