SOUTHEASTERN OFFERING DEGREE IN HEALTH EDUCATION &
PROMOTION
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana
University is offering a new bachelor of science degree in health education
and promotion through the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies.
“The health care field is one of the
strongest areas of our economy and has significant employment opportunities,”
said Southeastern president Randy Moffett. “This new degree program will
help meet specific needs of hospitals, corporations and other employers
by providing highly skilled professionals who can develop effective health
promotion programs using modern communications technology. Their work can
contribute significantly to improving the overall health of our citizens.”
“The program is designed to prepare
students for employment as certified health specialists working in community
and worksite health institutions, agencies and organizations,” said Linda
Synovitz, program coordinator. Students can elect to specialize in one
of two concentrations: worksite or community health promotion.
Synovitz said both concentrations
focus on teaching students how to plan, implement and evaluate health programs
at community health agencies, public health departments, hospital health
promotion and wellness departments, and worksites or corporations implementing
disease prevention or wellness programs. Graduates will be qualified to
take the Certified Health Educational Specialist (CHES) examination.
The program requires 123-124
credit hours. The curriculum includes courses in human disease, nutrition,
first aid, human sexuality, stress management, drug abuse prevention, health
instruction methods, promotion assessment and planning.
For additional information on
the program, contact Synovitz at 985-549-3867 (lsynovitz@selu.edu)
or Ralph Wood at 985-549-2131 (rwood@selu.edu)
in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies.
The program is the second new
undergraduate program added at Southeastern in recent months. Last semester,
Southeastern began offering a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. Over
the last two years, four new graduate programs also were added to the university
offerings. |
