SOUTHEASTERN HONORS PROGRAM NEWSLETTER WINS NATIONAL AWARD
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University’s Honors Program has won a national award for its annual newsletter and recruiting brochure, “The Lion’s Eye.”
Honors Program Director James Walter said the newsletter was awarded second place in the “Faculty/Student-produced” category of a nationwide contest sponsored by the National Collegiate Honors Council.
A total of 33 colleges and university honors programs entered their newsletters in the competition, Walter said.
Several students contributed photos and articles for the newsletter, while Walter wrote articles describing the Honors Program. “Many alumni contributed brief bios, and Brandee Ketchum, a marketing and honors program graduate, did the digital layout,” Walter said. “Patti Steib (a staff member in the university’s Center for Faculty Excellence) did final touch-up editing.”
The award-winning newsletter is available under the “News and Announcements” link on the Honors Program’s website, www.selu.edu/honors.
Southeastern’s Honors Program offers sequences of integrated courses, taught in a learning community environment. Four Honors curriculum options or "paths" feature comprehensive and in-depth coverage of material; lively discussion and debate; and intellectual friendship among students and their professors. Honors Program benefits include special scholarships, early-priority registration, travel opportunities, extracurricular events and lectures, an honors residence hall, membership in the Honors Student Organization, honors academic credit shown on the transcript, and achievement awards. Each of the university's academic colleges also offers upper-division honors curricula beyond the foundation courses in the university Honors Program, allowing students to earn an honors diploma in a major or discipline.
For additional information about the Honors Program, contact Walter at 985-549-2135 or honors@selu.edu.
