INTERNS AT IBM -- Three Southeastern

SOUTHEASTERN STUDENTS,
PROFESSORS SPEND
SUMMER AT IBM
HAMMOND – A Southeastern Louisiana
University alumnus has paved the way for three Southeastern students to
received prestigious summer internships with the worldwide computer giant,
IBM.
Matthew Mohon of Bogalusa, Sean
O’Connell of Mandeville, and Kyle Schatzle of Ponchatoula will spend the
next couple of months learning the ropes of the technological aspects of
IBM in Phoenix.
Two faculty members -- Ken Li,
associate professor of mathematics, and Robert McMorrow, instructor in
computer science -- will also work for IBM this summer.
Southeastern's IBM "connection"
is Albert Kuhn, a 1965 Southeastern graduate and 2002 Alumnus of the Year,
who heads a $4 billion Global Delivery Project between IBM and American
Express.
Li, who will work as a supplemental
advisory engineer from early June until mid-August, called the appointment
"a golden opportunity for me and for Southeastern."
"We can grow by working in an
industrial surrounding and bring that experience back to our classrooms,"
he said.
Mohon, a junior management major,
is a certified A+ technician who has worked for Lallie Kemp Medical Center
as a database analyst and St. Tammany Medical Center in inventory tracking.
He has volunteered his time and talents to the Bogalusa School System,
where he performed network development and maintenance. He is a 10-year
member of the Boy Scouts of America with an Eagle Scout ranking.
O’Connell, a junior majoring
in mathematics and computer science, is a Dean’s List student and recipient
of the Presidential Honors Scholarship Award and the Business and Technology
Scholarship Award. He is a computer science tutor and lab worker at Southeastern
and has worked for RxTechnology as an Excel/Access programmer and for the
Louisiana State Police as a project leader for a large scale database storage
project. He is the current vice president and secretary of the Association
for Computing Machinery at Southeastern.
A computer science major Schatzle,
who is also a junior, manages one of the main campus computer labs that
serve Southeastern students, faculty and staff. He also works as a network
administrator for K2Enterprises in Hammond and set up the computer intranet
for a Hammond dental office. He was one of three Southeastern sophomores
who participated in the State Programming Competition last year and is
activity director for Southeastern’s Association for Computing Machinery.
