SOUTHEASTERN STUDENTS, PROFESSORS SPEND SUMMER AT IBM
HAMMOND – A Southeastern Louisiana University alumnus has paved the way for three Southeastern students to received prestigious summer internships with the worldwide computer giant, IBM.
Matthew Mohon of Bogalusa, Sean O’Connell of Mandeville, and Kyle Schatzle of Ponchatoula will spend the next couple of months learning the ropes of the technological aspects of IBM in Phoenix.
Two faculty members -- Ken Li, associate professor of mathematics, and Robert McMorrow, instructor in computer science -- will also work for IBM this summer.
Southeastern's IBM "connection" is Albert Kuhn, a 1965 Southeastern graduate and 2002 Alumnus of the Year, who heads a $4 billion Global Delivery Project between IBM and American Express.
Li, who will work as a supplemental advisory engineer from early June until mid-August, called the appointment "a golden opportunity for me and for Southeastern."
"We can grow by working in an industrial surrounding and bring that experience back to our  classrooms," he said.
Mohon, a junior management major, is a certified A+ technician who has worked for Lallie Kemp Medical Center as a database analyst and St. Tammany Medical Center in inventory tracking. He has volunteered his time and talents to the Bogalusa School System, where he performed network development and maintenance. He is a 10-year member of the Boy Scouts of America with an Eagle Scout ranking.
O’Connell, a junior majoring in mathematics and computer science, is a Dean’s List student and recipient of the Presidential Honors Scholarship Award and the Business and Technology Scholarship Award. He is a computer science tutor and lab worker at Southeastern and has worked for RxTechnology as an Excel/Access programmer and for the Louisiana State Police as a project leader for a large scale database storage project. He is the current vice president and secretary of the Association for Computing Machinery at Southeastern.
A computer science major Schatzle, who is also a junior, manages one of the main campus computer labs that serve Southeastern students, faculty and staff. He also works as a network administrator for K2Enterprises in Hammond and set up the computer intranet for a Hammond dental office. He was one of three Southeastern sophomores who participated in the State Programming Competition last year and is activity director for Southeastern’s Association for Computing Machinery.
