KSLU, HHS TEAM UP FOR SPOOKY HALLOWEEN RADIO SHOW
HAMMOND -- Radio theater will rise from the dead this Halloween, compliments of
90.9 KSLU Alternative Public Radio and Hammond High School.
Southeastern Louisiana University’s public radio station and Hammond High students have teamed up for a live production featuring two Edgar Allen Poe short stories, “The Black Cat” and “Hop Frog.” The stories were adapted for radio by Hammond High teacher Monica Sullivan’s Fine Arts Survey classes, and will be presented at 7 p.m. Halloween evening on KSLU (90.9FM).
“The shows are complete with in-studio sound effects created live, just as they were in the heyday of radio theater in the ‘30s and ‘40s,” said KSLU General Manager Wayne Cain.
Cain and KSLU Program Director Todd Delaney recently gave two-day presentations on creating live sound effects and the history of radio theater to the Hammond High classes. They also observed rehearsals and provided feedback on script writing, story points, dialogue, and the timing of sound effects and music cues.
“It’s been a wonderful collaborative experience working on this project together with Monica and the students,” said Cain. “This is a production that will chill you to the bone. We’re inviting young and old to join us for this special Halloween treat.”
Cain said a number of local businesses have underwritten costs for the production, including Innovative Audio, Cream of the Crop, Winner’s Car Care, Brady’s Restaurant, Tipper’s Seafood and Po Boys, Brown’s Downtown Car Care, Class Works, Coop DeVille, and Baskin Robbins.
Support is also provided by several Hammond High School organizations including the Torettes, Key Club, Beta Club, True Business Leaders of America, Student Council, Hammond Height, Spanish Club, and the Hammond High School Art Department. Individual support is being provided by Mildred Johnson, Pat Bender, and Rachel Robbins.
