KSLU WINS 2005 KATIE, COLLEGIATE BROADCASTERS, COMMUNICATOR AWARDS
HAMMOND -- Southeastern
Louisiana University’s public radio station, 90.9 KSLU, has been selected
for five national and international communication awards, including the
prestigious “Katie” and Collegiate Broadcasters awards.
KSLU’s radio documentary
“The New Orleans Writing Marathon Revisited,” produced locally by Interim
General Manager Todd Delaney and Student Music Director Ariane Trahan,
a junior management major from Hammond, received three honors -- the 2005
Katie Award for Radio Documentary, the Collegiate Broadcasters award for
Best Radio Documentary and a Communicator “Award of Distinction.”
KSLU also received a Communicator
Award of Excellence for its public service announcement “Avoiding Downed
Power Lines” and a Communicator Honorable Mention in the station promotion
category for the student-produced show “Dangerous Sounds.”
“It is an honor to be recognized
by our peers,” Delaney said. “It is a testament to the hard work, integrity
and professionalism that we require of ourselves and instill and teach
in our student employees.”
Delaney and Trahan developed
“The New Orleans Writing Project Revisited” in conjunction with the Southeastern
Louisiana Writing Project (SLWP), one of 170 National Writing Project sites
across the country. In a special institute each summer, SLWP brings together
teachers, including Southeastern English faculty, to share their best writing
practices. One of the institute’s annual activities is a “writing marathon”
in New Orleans.
“The Katie,” awarded by
the Press Club of Dallas, honors the best journalists and communicators
in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. The
Collegiate Broadcasters Award recognizes excellence in student production
and performance work in the areas of broadcast, cable, closed circuit,
Internet, radio and television. The Communicator Awards is an international
awards program founded by communications professionals to recognize excellence
in the communications field.
KSLU, the north shore’s
only public radio station, has won numerous state and national awards during
the last 30 years. Programming content ranges from in-depth local, national
and business news and performance programs such as “World Café”
and “American Routes” to locally produced jazz, blues and popular music
programs. KSLU also serves as a hands-on education facility for Southeastern
students. |
