MATH PROFESSOR TO PRESENT SLU’S KENELLY-VOSS LECTURES
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana
University mathematics professor Tilak de Alwis will present the university’s
Kenelly-Voss Lecture Series March 25 and March 27.
De Alwis is the first recipient
of Southeastern’s Kenelly-Voss Endowed Professorship in Mathematics. A
member of the Southeastern faculty for more than 13 years, he received
his doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of Minnesota,
Minneapolis in 1988.
In his lectures De Alwis’ will
discuss the center of gravity of two and three-dimensional objects. The
free presentations are scheduled on both dates for 12:30-1:45 p.m., in
Fayard Hall Room 215.
At the conclusion of the March
25 lecture members of the audience will be invited to participate in a
contest. “A question will be posed to the audience and one entry will be
randomly chosen from the correct answers,” De Alwis said. The winner will
receive a Jacmel Inn gift certificate provided by owner Paul Murphy.
The Kenelly-Voss Endowed Professorship
in Mathematics was established through a donation from John Kenelly, Alumni
Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Clemson University, and a 1957
Southeastern graduate. A native of Bogalusa, Kenelly is known nationally
for his interest in using technology to revitalize mathematics instruction.
Southeastern honored his achievements in higher education instruction and
administration in 1994 by naming him Alumnus of the Year. He established
the professorship along with his late wife, Charmaine Voss Kenelly, a 1956
Southeastern graduate. |
