SLU SCHOLARSHIP HONORS BRENDA HERSON HUNTER
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University has established a scholarship in honor
of the late Brenda Herson Hunter, a long-time Lake Charles Head Start director and advocate for
children.
Hunter's daughter, Kim Hunter Reed, is executive assistant to President Sally Clausen.
Announcing the scholarship at the university's Alumni Awards Evening on November 17,
Clausen said its is being funded through a donation from Washington, D.C. attorney Myer
Feldman, an adviser to two Presidents, successful businessman and civic activist.
When Feldman visited Southeastern in December 1999 to deliver the university's
commencement address, he said he was "impressed with the caliber of the leadership" at
Southeastern. Clausen said that Feldman has donated $20,000 to establish the scholarship in
Brenda Hunter's honor.
A Baton Rouge native, Mrs. Hunter moved to Lake Charles in 1965 with her husband,
Lawrence Hunter, and daughter. A year later, she began a three-decade career with Head Start,
first as a social worker, then as director for 29 years. She was one of the founders of the
Louisiana Head Start Association and served on state, regional and national Head Start boards. A
staunch advocate for children, she was consulted on a national and international basis, reviewing
early childhood programs in England, Wales, the Republic of China, Zimbabwe and South
Africa.
Hunter served as a delegate for the White House Conference on Children during the
Carter Administration and received commendations from President Bill Clinton, Governor
Edwin Edwards and the Louisiana Senate and House of Representatives for her 30 years of
