SOUTHEASTERN TO HOST LOSS TEAM TRAINING
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Division of Student Affairs, in conjunction with Tangipahoa's Coroner's Office, the district attorney's office and North Oaks Health System, will sponsor a training program that offers support to the family and friends of suicide victims.
The session will offer team training by LOSS – “Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors” -- an award-winning East Baton Rouge Parish pilot program designed to provide immediate support and resources to those dealing with the loss of a loved one due to suicide.
Training will be held Saturday, July 17 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at North Oaks Health System’s Women's Pavilion.  A representative from the Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention center will offer training on dealing with suicides and how to provide immediate support and resources to suicide survivors.
LOSS team members meet once a month to discuss the encounters with suicide survivors, debrief, update other team members on recent contacts and sign up for the proceeding month=s schedule.  The team members also aid police in death notifications, attend funeral services and act as peer facilitators in the weekly Survivors of Suicide Support Group.
Those interested in the training session must pre-enroll by contacting Carol Magendie, assistant to the vice president for student affairs at Southeastern, 985-549-3813.
