SOUTHEASTERN MILITARY HISTORIAN SELECTED FOR NATIONAL SECURITY FORUM
HAMMOND -- Harry S. Laver, assistant professor of history at Southeastern Louisiana University, has been selected to participate in the 52nd annual National Security Forum of the Air War College of the U.S. Air Force.
A specialist in U.S. military history, the American Civil War and military leadership, Laver received notification of his selection from Acting Secretary of the Air Force Peter Teets. The forum will be held at Maxwell Air Base in Montgomery, Ala., May 23-27, and is one of the premier events of Air University, the Air Force’s center for professional military education.
“This is an extremely prestigious honor,” said History and Political Science Department Head William Robison. “The forum focuses on the challenges and potential responses to our evolving global security environment.”
Laver was selected after first being nominated by an active Air Force officer then completing an application. The Air War College reviews the nominees and makes recommendations to the Air Force Secretary. Approximately 150 individuals  -- representing businesses, universities, industry, media and state and local governments from throughout the nation -- are selected to participate.
“The forum is designed for seminar discussions,” said Laver, who has been on the Southeastern faculty since 2001. “Participants are divided into smaller groups that mix civilian and military personnel who discuss issues dealing with national security and defense. It is a tremendous learning experience for anyone engaged in studying military history and defense strategy.”
Laver holds a doctorate in history from the University of Kentucky and was recognized in 1997 for having the best article published n the “Kentucky Register,” the official publication of the Kentucky Historical Society. He is a recipient of the U.S. Army’s Achievement Medal for Civilian Service for teaching at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point.
