SOUTHEASTERN, LIVINGSTON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD SIGN AGREEMENT TO AWARD COLLEGE COURSE CREDITS FOR QUALIFIED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
       HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University and the Livingston Parish School Board have signed an agreement allowing qualified high school students in the system to earn college credit by successfully completing certain academic courses.
       Southeastern President Randy Moffett and Livingston Parish Public School Superintendent Randy Pope signed the agreement at the school board’s meeting Thursday evening (Nov. 17) in Livingston.
       “This is another example of a strong, on-going partnership that Southeastern and the Livingston Parish School System have enjoyed for decades,” said Moffett. “This relationship has proven to be mutually beneficial and has served as a model for our partnerships with other area school systems.”
       Under the arrangement, approved courses are being taught at selected public high schools by Livingston Parish high school teachers who have been approved by their respective principals. Course content and proficiency requirements have been developed to ensure that university academic requirements are met.
       Students who successfully complete the courses and demonstrate college-level proficiency will be awarded college credit during their first semester of enrollment at Southeastern.
       “The Livingston Parish School System is very proud to work collaboratively with Southeastern to be able to provide our students these educational opportunities,” said Randy Pope, superintendent. “These classes will encourage students to take more challenging subjects in high school while enjoying the added benefit of college credit. It’s a win-win situation for both Livingston Parish students and Southeastern Louisiana University.”
       “This kind of arrangement provides a great opportunity for high school students in Livingston Parish to get an early start on their college careers,” Moffett said. “It’s one more step in our efforts to create a more seamless educational system for Louisiana students.”
       Courses initially approved include “Freshman Composition,” (ENG 101); “College Algebra,” (MATH 161); “Plane Trigonometry,” (MATH 162); “Calculus I,” (MATH 200); “General Biology I,” (BIO 151); and “Inorganic Chemistry,” (CHEM 121). Additional courses may be added to the list in the future.
       Earlier this year Southeastern signed a similar agreement with the St. Tammany Parish School System allowing students to begin taking the entry level courses in the fall.
       “Increasingly, highly qualified high school students are looking for chances to start their college education as early as possible,” Moffett said. “Under this approach, students can complete a semester or more of college work while still in high school, allowing them to graduate from the university in fewer than four years.”
       To participate in the program, Livingston Parish students must meet the following criteria:
       · be on track to meet Southeastern’s admission standards upon high school graduation;
       · be approved by the school principal to participate;
       · meet any prerequisites for the course;
       · complete the enrollment  process and pay any fees as required by the Livingston Parish School System or Southeastern.
