SLU TO CELEBRATE MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY JAN 21
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana
University will celebrate Martin Luther King Day with a candlelight processional
and program on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The annual event is sponsored by the
Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
The processional will begin at
5:30 p.m. at the University Center, said Alpha Phi Alpha advisor Ronald
Valentine, transition advisor for Southeastern’s Student Support Services.
He said participants will walk through the University Avenue tunnel to
Lee Hall and then to the War Memorial Student Union Ballroom, where the
program will begin at 7 p.m.
Guest speaker Glenda Coburt,
an East Baton Rouge Parish educator, will talk about the late civil rights
leader’s life and legacy. The program will also include poetry, biographical
information about King and a performance by the Southeastern Gospel Choir.
At the conclusion, the fraternity will continue its tradition of laying
a wreath at the tree planted in King’s memory in the Student Union Park.
