SOUTHEASTERN HOSTS MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CELEBRATION JAN. 19
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will celebrate the legacy of the late Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with a candlelight processional and program on Wednesday, Jan. 19.
The theme for the event, sponsored annually by the Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, is "Capturing The Dream: Unity Through Diversity."
The processional will begin at 7 p.m. at Lee Hall, said Alpha Phi Alpha’s Aron Walker of New Orleans. He said participants will walk to the Student Union Theatre, where a remembrance program will begin.
The program will include remarks by Joseph K. Byrd, vice president of student life at Xavier University in New Orleans, and a performance by Christina Hanible of Hammond, winner of the Southeastern Star 2 competition.
At the conclusion, Alpha Phi Alpha will continue the tradition of laying a wreath at the tree planted in King's memory in the War Memorial Student Union park.
