CANCER AWARENESS IS FOCUS OF "A MESSAGE OF HOPE"
HAMMOND On October 26, Southeastern Louisiana University, the Stanley S. Scott
Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society will present the inaugural "A Message of Hope"
cancer awareness program.
The interactive panel discussion will provide the community with up-to-date statistics
about cancer and is scheduled for 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Room 133 of the Southeastern University
Center in Hammond. Free prostate cancer screening to help identify high-risk individuals will
also be available from 3 to 5 p.m. in Room 139 of the University Center.
Panel members for "A Message of Hope" are:
     * Oliver Sartor, M.D., is a nationally recognized prostate cancer researcher. Sartor is a
professor of medicine and urology at the Louisiana State University Medical School, director of
the school's Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center and the chief of hematology/oncology.
     * Mary Ella Sanders, M.D., is the director of the department of radiation oncology at
Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. She is also a clinical associate professor in radiation oncology
at Tulane School of Medicine. Sanders currently serves as the president of the Louisiana Board
of Regents.
     * Former Chief United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Morey
L. Sear, is a prostate cancer survivor. Eight years ago he was told there was nothing more that
could be done to cure his cancer. He then met Dr. Sartor, who, in consultation with others,
devised the treatment that effectively attacked the cancer.
     * Sandy Patterson is a registered nurse and the quality resources/compliance officer at
North Oaks Health System. She is also a seven year, two-time breast cancer survivor and vice
president of the Tangipahoa chapter of the American Cancer Society.
The panel will discuss various cancer topics and answer questions focusing on education,
awareness and early detection. The program will kick off the American Cancer Society's sixth
annual Hammond Relay for Life event, scheduled for November 4 at North Oak Park.
