RECENT GRADUATE PICKED FOR NEH SUMMER INSTITUTE
HAMMOND -- A recent graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University’s master’s degree program in education has been selected as one of 25 students in the nation to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities summer institute at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Rose Pichon, who teaches at Northshore High School in Slidell, is currently participating in the program through mid-July. Pichon received her master’s degree and certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) from Southeastern at the spring commencement ceremonies in May. She expects to use her ESL training with both students and adults who are learning English.
The institute is designed to instruct teachers in methods of integrating Mexican American and Latino literature and culture into the classroom. The program utilizes the geographic location of San Antonio as a means of involving students in cultural resources of the community. Participants also have the opportunity to attend the Latina Letters Literary Conference in San Antonio.
“We are getting the opportunity study, learn and talk with noted Latino and Mexican scholars,” Pichon said. “We are learning how to integrate Latin American studies and culture as part of the secondary curriculum, such as in Spanish, social studies and language arts. And the rich historical and cultural sites in San Antonio add to this whole learning experience.”
Edie Slaton, interim head of the department of educational leadership and technology at Southeastern who taught Pichon last semester, called her a “dynamic individual who is always trying to find new ways of helping her students learn.”
“We are proud that Rose was selected for this prestigious institute and know that she will return with enthusiasm and ideas that will help her students,” Slaton said.
