News release Public Information Office  SLU 10880   Hammond, LA 70402   phone: 985-549-2341   fax: 985-549-2061 publicinfo@selu.edu Spring 2004 news releases Public Information home News archive Contact: Angey Murray Date: 3/10/05   SOUTHEASTERN GEARING UP FOR NINTH ANNUAL ROCK ‘N ROAR MARCH 12        HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University’s Rock ‘n Roar Fest, a day-long festival showcasing Southeastern's quality academics and family-friendly atmosphere, will kick into gear for the community at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 12, offering four hours of something for everyone.       Headquartered at the War Memorial Student Union, Rock ‘n Roar has recently announced its entertainment lineup and array of southern cuisine and snacks for people to enjoy while taking in numerous activities such as arts and crafts booths, a plant sale, children’s games and more.        Beginning at 11 a.m., the Southeastern Gospel Choir will take the stage, followed by Sounds Unlimited, who will continue to spin out tunes throughout the day. Also performing are the Lemoine Academy of Dance, Southeastern Lionettes’ dance camp participants, A Touch of Class Performing Arts dance troupe and members of Southeastern’s dance program. A guest performance by the new Miss Southeastern, Heather Williams of Slidell, is also scheduled.       Several camps still have available spaces, including baseball, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Alumni Field for children ages 6 –13 ($5 registration fee), and dance ($15 registration fee). Applications for camps can be picked up at the Southeastern Alumni Center, 500 West University Ave. or registrants can apply online at www.selu.edu/roarfest. Pre-registration for campus is mandatory due to limited space.       For those visitors who find the day’s activities to work up an appetite, Rock ‘n Roar offers an extended lineup of food and drinks by Southeastern organizations, alumni groups and more. Some treats for sale will include hot dogs, Frito pies, red beans, jambalaya, hamburgers, nachos, crawfish, curly fries, pizza. For the sweet tooth, ice cream, snowballs, cotton candy, baked goods, funnel cakes, donuts, coffee and strawberry beignets will be made available also.      For the shopper, Rock ‘n Roar continues its partnership this year with the Hammond Downtown Development District’s Saturday marketplace, which will move to campus March 12 only. In addition, Southeastern’s fraternities and sororities will sponsor a garage. For health conscious patrons, Southeastern School of Nursing’s health fair, co-sponsored with North Oaks Health System, will offer information on self-breast exams, strokes, heart health and more. The fair will also offer screenings for blood pressure, glucose and body mass, and instructions on scooter and fire safety for children.        Rock ‘n Roar IX will also feature a petting zoo, puppet show, games, face-painting, popular camps for children, the University Police Department's free KidCare Photo I.D. program, and activities such as a space walk and interaction with Southeastern’s lion mascot, Roomie. In addition, the university will have available a bungee run, rock climbing wall, jousting spacewalk, baseball pitch and basketball free-throws.      In addition to the community, Rock ‘n Roar will also entertain teens from public and private schools from Washington, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington and West Feliciana parishes.
