SOUTHEASTERN SGA PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIPS
FOR SUMMER 2005 STUDY ABROAD
HAMMOND – A total
of 70 Southeastern Louisiana University students who plan to study abroad
this summer in seven countries have received scholarships from the university’s
Student Government Association.
This is the third
year that SGA has funded the scholarships, said the organization's president,
Brett Bova of Hammond. After initially providing $30,000, SGA doubled the
funding for the past two years, she said.
The $60,000 for summer 2005
will provide $1,250 "excellence award" scholarships for eight students
with a 3.9 or better grade point average, and 62 $800 scholarships for
academically qualified graduate students, juniors and sophomores.
“Our study abroad program
is extremely popular with our students, due in part to this unique student
scholarship program that the SGA has initiated,” said Provost and Vice
President for Academic Affairs John Crain. "The generosity of our SGA allows
Southeastern students to experience travel, once-in-a-lifetime cultural
connections and make progress towards their degrees all at the same time.”
“Study Abroad programs represent
a wonderful opportunity for students to expand their professional and personal
horizons and prepare for today’s, and tomorrow’s, challenges,” said Danilo
Levi, interim director of Southeastern’s International Initiatives Office.
“We provide an extensive program for our students to do just that. In total,
Southeastern offers 12 programs in Austria, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica,
France, Honduras and Italy.”
Feb. 28 is the deadline
for students to enroll in the Summer 2005 Study Abroad Program. Information
and application forms are available at www.selu.edu/Academics/studyabroad.
