SOUTHEASTERN’S COLUMBIA THEATRE PRESENTS “SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS”
HAMMOND – The 2004-05 season of Southeastern Louisiana University’s Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts continues April 8 with a rip-roaring stage version of the popular MGM movie, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”
“Goin’ courting” has never been as much fun as in this high-spirited show adapted from the big screen hit by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay and produced by Windwood Theatricals.
Millie is a young bride living in the 1850s Oregon wilderness whose plan to civilize and marry off her six rowdy brothers-in-law to ensure the success of her own marriage backfires when the brothers, in their enthusiasm, kidnap six women from a neighboring town to be their brides.
Curtain time at the historic downtown Hammond theater is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Columbia box office, 220 E. Thomas Street, 985-543-4371. Ticket prices are $30, Orchestra 1 and Loge; $23, Orchestra 2 and Balcony 1; $18, Orchestra 3; and $15, Balcony 2. Box office hours are noon-5 p.m., weekdays. Tickets are also available online through TicketWeb, www.ticketweb.com.
Bursting with the rambunctious energy of the original film, “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers” is all boisterous fun and romance that harkens back to the glory days of the movie musical.
New songs by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn have been added to a melody-drenched classic film score by Johnny Mercer and Gene de Paul that includes wistful ballads, charming comic turns and rousing showstopping dances.
With songs such as “Glad That You Were Born,” “Bless Your Beautiful Hide,” “Goin’ Courting," and “Wonderful, Wonderful Day,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” is rousing, charming, and witty.
The Dallas Times Herald called “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, "A show with an extraordinary amount of appeal shot through with much of the same vigor, high spirits, romance and deceptively ironic humor that characterized the movie.”
