SOUTHEASTERN
NAMES NEW COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES DEAN
HAMMOND – Tammy Bourg, former
chair of the psychology department at California State University – Sacramento,
has been named dean of Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Arts
and Sciences. Bourg’s appointment was confirmed in June by the University
of Louisiana Board of Supervisors. She assumed her new position at Southeastern
in mid-August.
A native of Dulac, La., Bourg
succeeds John Miller, who accepted the position of provost and vice president
for academic affairs at Eastern Oregon University last July. Associate
Dean Albert J. Doucette Jr. has been serving as interim dean.
“Dr. Bourg has a prestigious
record of accomplishments, and we are pleased to have her as part of Southeastern’s
team of distinguished faculty,” said John Crain, provost and vice president
for academic affairs. “The College of Arts and Sciences will play a pivotal
role for the university as we move forward with new initiatives in student
recruitment, progression, service learning, and community outreach.
Dr. Bourg’s leadership will be extremely important to our future academic
success in these areas.”
Bourg, a developmental psychologist,
said her first priority will be to meet and get to know the faculty in
the college’s departments. Calling the arts and sciences “a natural link
to the community,” she said she also plans to focus on increasing visibility
and attracting highly qualified students.
Bourg earned her bachelor’s degree
at the University of New Orleans and master’s and doctoral degrees from
the University of Houston. She joined the California State University psychology
faculty in 1986 and served as vice chair from 1996 until 1999, when she
became department chair.
Previously, she was a visiting
scholar at the Center for Research in Learning, Perception and Cognition
at the University of Minnesota and held graduate teaching and research
assistantships at the University of Houston. Bourg is a member of the American
Association for Higher Education and the American Psychological Society. |
